>>>Agenda for December

Seasons Greetings Pain-sters and Pain-ettes,

The time is almost December and these are the items on our agenda:

  1. SAVE THE FREEBUTT (we mean it this time)
  2. MISS PAIN LIVE ACTION – SUN 10 DEC
  3. SARAH & DOM GO ART-CORE
  4. L’AMOUR ELECTRONIQUE – SAT 16 DEC

1. SAVE THE FREEBUTT
The Freebutt is still closed. Essential sound-proofing (£4,000) has not been done, and looks unlikely to happen. The powers-that-be won’t even stump-up £200 to repair a fire-exit, so that the venue can re-open for acoustic gigs. Meanwhile, across town, their swish new venue The H*pe is conveniently plugging the gap.

We’ve heard The Freebutt is on the market for something ridiculous like £40,000, but they won’t sell it to anyone who plans to re-open as a live music venue – Say NO to competition, and a big YES to the Z*l monopoly. So, how long before some unscrupulous property developer knocks it down to build luxury flats? Just what Brighton needs.

If you don’t want to see yet another Brighton venue shut down, it’s time to do your bit. Write to Brighton and Hove City Council by filling out the form here.
Though they may be too busy ploughing money into refurbishing the Mecca Bingo hall for their plush 300-capacity, touring-band friendly, council-funded venue to worry about the local music scene having nowhere to develop. You could ask them to comment on that too!

Above all, go to The Penthouse more often, they’re open every night of the week, and they need your custom to keep the doors open. You could even donate a bit of loose-change towards the fund to fix that fire-exit.

2. SUNDAY10 DECEMBER
Miss Pain presents Stitched-up Tight
Live music from LUXEMBOURG + MISS PAIN
The Hope, Queen’s Road, Brighton
Doors: 8pm – 11pm
Entry: £5/£4 mit flyer

(sorry we had no choice about the venue, we’d originally booked it at The Freebutt, but were forced to re-locate or cancel.)

This is our first DIY live-art-performance spectacle since March, and we’ll be pulling out all the stops, dressing up the venue with an avalanche of lo-fi décor and visual stimuli. It’s also our last show of the year, so come and celebrate with us, we won’t disappoint. We never disappoint.

LUXEMBOURG perform apocalyptically good pop to a crowd of devotees, for whom everything else is just foreplay. Welcome to your new favourite band - if you relax, it will be painless.
Luxembourg have just released their debut album FRONT (released 23.10.06 on Dogbox Records)
www.myspace.com/luxembourgband

MISS PAIN recently headlined a full-to-bursting Brighton Live show, and have just picked up an NME RADAR feature (they said something about “Lambrini” “perverted uncles” and “caravans”!). They’ll be unleashing their wall of sound garage/electro-pop, pulling shapes, and generally causing a scene for loyal fans, curious first-timers, and the recently converted.

>>>LONDON LIVE ACTION THIS WEEK

Hello Pain-fans,
Listen up! We three Pains are excited to be making a rare outing to London village this coming week for a Girl Monster related noise-fest:

SATURDAY 04 NOVEMBER - LONDON
Legal Tender
Miss Pain (Live set and dj set) Onstage 11pm
+ Japanese Intelligence Mind Control + The Mount Cherries
Barden's Boudoir, 38-44 Stoke Newington Rd, N16 7XJ
doors: 8pm - 2am
entry: £6

HOW TO GET TO BARDEN'S
nearest overground station is Dalston & Kingsland (2 stops from Highbury & Islington Tube)
and here’s a Map 4 U
There’s also choices a-plenty for getting the night bus home, so no excuses Cinderella.

LEGAL TENDER organise post-punk and French pop disko parties in Athens, London and Paris. They are girl playing boyish songs and a boy playing girlie songs. They have very kindly invited Miss Pain to play live and DJ some records at their trés cool nite.

MISS PAIN, that’s us. Here’s what Legal tender very kindly said:
“an amazing "2-girl/1-boy electro-shock pop" group from Brighton. They're into Devo, John Foxx, Joe Meek & Francoise Hardy but their music is dancier and fresher, enveloped in a garage/electropop "wall of sound". They will also show off their DJ-ing skills that dazzle Brighton crowds at their regular event, L'amour electronique.”

And two words from the NME: “Mentally Ill.”

A crazy old lady was drawn in off the street and screamed at someone:
“With music like this, why do they still need to electrocute people?”

JAPANESE INTELLIGENCE MIND CONTROL is also featured on Girl Monster. One girl in shredded tights making dark, eerie, intense electro-acoustic buzz pop.

THE MOUNT CHERRIES two girls and three boys with a battery of toys to make noise with, skipping from folk to disco with their Lala-bella's super dancers on stage. http://www.myspace.com/themountcherries

What we did last week...

Dear Pain-fans,
On bank-holiday Monday we three Pains took a little trip to the seaside (it was a different seaside called Littlehampton)...

First we went to "Fun Land", where Leonardo Da Vinci drew this picture of us.

We tried to point out to him that Sarah doesn't actually have a beard of iron-filings, but he took our £3 and scarpered. Now where's the fun in that?

Next we went on the "amazing boat-train". Which wasn't very amazing but the 'locomotive' was shaped a bit like a boat. Here we are being amazed (note: Dom's incognito look)

We got off the train at an "adventure golf course", and we were ready for some adventure, so...

Sarah adopts her professional golfer stance.

Adventure Golf scoreboard
1. Dom Pain (possibly due to some lax score-keeping on his part)
2. Sarah Pain (lead the field until a disastrous round on the Volcano hole)
3. Verity Pain (a slow start, but made up soem ground on the last few holes)

On returning to Dom and Verity's 'hood, they were shocked to discover the secret was out:

On Wednesday, we returned to The Red Room to mix three new recordings, which will be on MySpace very soon.

Dom returns from another vocal-take with his drink of choice - hot honey and lemon with a shot of brandy.

Meanwhile Verity and Sarah busy themselves with work of greater importance...

Later that week, Sarah shamelessly dropped 'Endoscopy Blues' whilst DJ'ing at an indie club. And the kids? They shook their skinny little asses.

Stay tuned for more Pain-ful shenanigans, and keep an eye on MiceBase for those new recordings.

This is Mister Pain signing out.

Three Go Camping In Sussex

The mighty Miss Pain 3 went camping this weekend...Imagine if you can the sight of Verity, Dominic and I cycling along in our best summer outfits...tents strapped to our bikes, smiles on our faces (sometimes). We then watched shooting stars in the sky and didnt really sleep a wink, as it was rather uncomfortable, and Verity and I kept rolling onto Dom because we camped on a slope...But even though we are a little sleepy now, we still agree that WE LOVE NATURE! HURRAY!

>>>Save the Freebutt / French Disko 15.07.06 / Vote Pain again

Salutations Pain-fans,

The word on the street is that The Freebutt has been closed due to noise complaints from local residents. This is bad bad news for live music in Brighton, especially as people are being rather cagey about when it will re-open.

Do your bit:

But let’s not let them piss on our parade, keep coming to The Penthouse, and help keep the place ticking over. Here’s a good reason:

L’Amour Electronique has gone MONTHLY.

A Postcard from Leningrad

The mighty Les Georges Leningrad almost disappointed us and a horde of Brighton-types last Saturday. But they turned up in the nick of time, and blew a hole in our heads with their awesome no-wave-disco-screams-and-perversions. Merci Poney, Mingo et Bobo.

Afterwards they had nowhere to stay, so Sarah offered them her floor, and we took them under Miss Pain's wing. And what did we do with them? Took them to a kebab shop, fed them cheap cider, talked French Pop and stage decor, and taught them puerile swears like 'Wanker'. Aren't we good little Pains?

Catch them if you can in Europe:

2006-07-12 - London, UK @ Barden’s Boudoir (Delete Yourself Club), Les Georges Leningrad w/ Dandi Wind + Crystal Castles
2006-07-14 - Montmartin sur mer, Fr @ Fest. Chauffer dans la noirceur, Les Georges Leningrad w/ Final Fantasy, Panico
2006-07-15 - Dour, BE @ Festival de Dour, Les Georges Leningrad w/ Primal Scream + The Gossip + Katerine ...

>>> PAIN + BRITCH = MELODRAMA. Brighton, this Friday

!Newsflash! !Lightning strikes! !Thunder claps! !Theremin wails eerily across the ether!

Yep, them Pains have been coaxed out of hiding for this End-of-Brighton-Festival-Spectacular

FRIDAY 26 MAY
Miss Pain + Dear Britch + The Don Bradmans + Rupert Noble video screenings
Hanbury Ballroom, St Georges Rd, Kemptown
Doors: 9.30pm - late
Entry: £5/£4 concessions

Self-styled “1st lady of the ghetto” Dear Britch hosts an evening of Britch-i-ness and faded glamour (like you used to get down the end of the pier). Dear Britch will hold court and perform throughout the evening. Dear Britch must be seen. Dear Britch must be obeyed. For Dear Britch, life is art. Dear Britch may well be the Quentin Crisp / Marjorie Proops of the electro world.

Miss Pain will be headlining this seedy cabaret in their usual inimitable way. They promise cheap thrills and spills, screaming, preening, posing and falling, plus a brand new song about microscopic cameras.
Miss Pain will be onstage at about 11.30pm

The Don Bradmans will also play. (For those of you who know Dom Pain’s civilian name, this may be confusing.) The Don Bradmans regard themselves as “the undisputed champions of chap rock”. There are many of them, and they all go by the name Don Bradman, whilst sporting head-to-toe tweed and well groomed facial whiskers.

Moving pictures will be provided by Mister Rupert Noble, who has been responsible for creating striking pop videos for the likes of The Long Blondes, This Et Al, The Dirty Three. Rupert also made Miss Pain’s dashing ‘Caught My Eye’ video, which will be screened during the evening.

Be there, or be in our bad-books.

>>>Pain on Radio 1 TONITE + L’Amour Electronique a la weekend

Hello Pain-sters,

a quick newsflash for you, and then details of L’Amour Electronique this Saturday.

Tune in to Radio 1 tonite (TUE 11 APR) to hear Miss Pain’s ‘Sell it 2 the Kids’.
Yes, that nice Mister Huw Stephens liked it so much he’s chosen it as his Unsigned Track of the Week. That’s RADIO 1, 11pm -1am.

Got a hot date? Washing your hair? Don’t fret, for the show will be available for your listening pleasure for 7 days post-broadcast. Just go to
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onemusic/

And while you’re there, maybe you should email Huw and tell him how much you just love that Miss Pain track and that he should definitely play it again. And again. And again.

We are also going to be included on Radio 1’s Best Of Unsigned Podcast, which can be downloaded from
www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/onemusic/unsigned/index.shtml#podcast for a limited period only... apparently (and rather logically), the more people that subscribe to it, the higher it gets in the podcast chart... and the more people get to hear Miss Pain. So go forth and Download.

But that’s not all. ‘Sell it 2 the Kids’ will also be included on Huw’s Unsigned webpage, for a couple of weeks, so you can download it and leave gushing praise on the message board.

Isn’t that exciting?
That's Huw at the back, by the way.

On Saturday, we’ll be doing this:
SAT 15 APR
L'Amour Electronique
Miss Pain DJ's play Synth Pop, French Pop, Electro Pop

>>>NEW WEBSITE. plus! Girl-to-the-power-of-eight-Pop

Look Mum! We've got a new website!

Ain't she pretty? Too many new features to go into here, but the SHOP has some delightful new Pain memorabilia...

A round of applause for Dom Pain who's struggled with his sanity getting it finished - no more dreaming in HTML for him!

[TIP: if you are still getting an UNDER CONSTRUCTION message, try opening the page and hitting CTRL+F5 to refresh yr browser - this works on PCs, and there is probably Mac equivalent, but I ain't got a clue what it is]

To celebrate this worldwideweb mile-stone, them Pains are being let out for a very special night of Girl-to-the-power-of-eight-Pop:

MON 27 MAR - BRIGHTON
The Pipettes + Miss Pain + Teasing Lulu
The Concorde2, Madeira Drive
doors: 8pm
entry: £6.50 (adv)/ £8.50 (on the door) BUY ADVANCE TICKETS

It's an ALL AGES SHOW which means everyone can come. Just so long as
they are accompanied by a responsible adult. (check
the Concorde2 website for a definition of responsible adult)

Yep, it's big stages and dressing rooms for us Pains. Though the
dressing rooms aren't as glamorous as they sound - more like a room
that you wouldn't particularly want to get dressed in.

Miss Pain's girl/boy electro-shock melodrama starts at about 9pm, and
is mouth-wateringly sandwiched betwixt Teasing Lulu's shouty girl
punk-pop and The Pipettes' sassy polka-dot grrrl group delights.

Here's the full Girl-to-the-power-of-eight-Pop schedule:
Doors: 8pm
Teasing Lulu: 8.20pm
Miss Pain: 9pm
The Pipettes: 9.45pm
Note: There will be a DJ, playing "appropriate" music.

It's Monday night and it will be fun. Yes it will. Yes, we speak the truth.

If you're still reading, then we suggest you got to the website and
enjoy the curios in the noise/action area. That's fun too.

Message Ends.
Love
The
Miss Pain

Pole Dancing...

I sometimes DJ at 'Sirens' @ The Candy Bar, Brighton. It's a lesbian bar with pole dancing...Interesting idea...Anyway, my favourite thing is when the dancers don't bring their own music....Oh dear, i have to choose the music...Last time I got the ladies pole dancing to The Fat Truckers and Kraftwerk...Ace! They seemed to like it...Brilliant! Next time it will be Miss Pain...xx

>>>Motormark! Pain! Party! Brighton this Sunday

Dear Pain-fans,
But THIS IS IMPORTANT.

DO NOT GO TO POLAR CENTRAL ON FRIDAY 10TH MARCH.
THE GIG HAS BEEN MOVED TO
:

SUNDAY 12 MARCH
Miss Pain is having a Child's Party!
Live entertainments from
Motormark + Miss Pain
THE MARLBOROUGH THEATRE, PRINCES ST, BRIGHTON
LOCATION OF VENUE
doors: 7pm
entry: £5/£3 mit flyer

Here's the flyer, print it now...

It's a kiddies birthday party, so wear yr best party outfits and bring yr sweet tooth.

MOTORMARK (Digital Hardcore Recordings) will be headlining - you'll be dancing and jerking in a buzz-erk frenzy.

Motormark are Jane Motoro (shit hot vox and bass) & Marko PoloRoid
(wired electronix and distorted guitars) from Kirkcaldy in Scotland.

They'll shoot you up with a volley of Uzi-drum machine/synth/guitar hyper-electro-punk-pop.

MISS PAIN play their first hometown show of the year. Expect goody-two-shoes synth-bashing, and squealing manic glee.

It's wham bam electro-glam sugar-rush of synthetic pop that will leave you dizzy in the head and itching for more.

Plus! There'll be party games (pass the parcel, musical statues, pin the plait on Sarah Pain, etc) and sugary sweets and sickly treats galore.

I feel a bit sick now.

>>>Miss Pain gets Totally Wired>>>

Salutations good readers,
We’d first off like to thank everyone who came to see us play last weekend - Windsor was chock full of strangelings (ever get the feeling you’re at the only nightclub in town?), and Brixton was a blast (all broken strings and flying feathers). Thank you also to Hiem, X-Wife and Large Number for sharing stages, floors, drinks, equipment and laughs with us.

Now some breaking news:
The Brighton Polar Central show on March 10th has had to be moved.
Miss Pain and Motormark will now be playing on
SUNDAY 12th MARCH
at THE MARLBOROUGH THEATRE, PRINCES ST, BRIGHTON
it all kicks off at 7pm, wear your best party clothes.

This weekend sees us Pain’s on the airwaves. Totally Wired presenters, Marcus and Anna, have invited us in to talk about the Electronic Bible 2 compilation, and to play some of our fave tracks off it. We’ll be broadcast across Brighton and all over the WorldWideWeb. And it’ll be LIVE. gulp!

You can listen to Totally Wired in the Brighton area on Juice 107.2 FM, this Sunday from 8pm - 10pm.
Or if you have a speedy connection, you can listen on t’internet at http://www.totallyradio.com/. (and the show will be available for your listening pleasure for a full week afterwards).

Then on Monday the Electronic Bible chapter 2 will be racked up in all good record shops - so go and get your own slice of electronic goodness. As well as Miss Pain’s ‘F* Machines’ (which earned the album a PARENTAL ADVISORY sticker, and was recently described by Plan B as a “Ballard-ian synthscrape... like The Normal-with-a-wide-on”), it features exclusive tracks by the likes of Large Number, Hiem, X-Wife, No Bra, Piney Gir, and Momus.

For those in an agoraphobic state of mind, the album is also available to download on iTunes http://www.apple.com/itunes/ or you can order the CD from http://www.whitelabelonline.com/.

Finally, the new website should almost definitely be online by Monday, if we can manage to resurrect our ancient PowerMac. We need a whole room to house her and a big set of bellows to get her started, but we love our dear old Mac, and we’ve been through a lot together...

thanks for reading,
love the Miss Pain three

>>>The Pains go marching in>>>

Hello and happy new year Pain-fans, welcome to this first proper Pain-missive for 2006.

We’ve been locked away in Miss Pain HQ plotting and scheming for the coming months. And this Saturday sees our first mission of the year (nb. The Pipettes gig on Thu 26th has been postponed, so don’t go):

SAT 28 JAN - CAMBRIDGE
Miss Pain + The Khe Sanh Approach + The Resistance
Portland Arms, 129 Chesterton Road, Cambridge, CB4 3BA [map]
doors: 8pm
entry: £4

Bundled into an unmarked van, bound for a headline show in Cambridge, synths and theremin primed to unleash a barrage of noise on the unsuspecting population. Having been cooped up since their chaotic pre-Christmas show, it looks likely this’ll be an unhinged and cathartic affair to drag those misbehaving machines kicking and screaming into 2006.

Other news from the world of Pain...
The new all-singing, all-dancing website is taking shape, we promise it will be a glorious affair of clashing colours, dashing imagery, obsessive detail and general frivolity. We’ll be emailing you as soon as it goes online. So just sit tight and be patient.

[YOU CAN HELP: We’re on the lookout for any material we can use on the new site. We want to document every single show we’ve played, and we need your help to do this. So if you took some photos, video, wrote a review, stole a set-list or have found any reviews, press-clippings, etc, of Miss Pain, please get in touch (thempains@misspain.co.uk). Thank you.]

Long-serving live favourite ‘F* Machines’ - described by Plan B as “a searing Ballardian synthscape...like The Normal-with-a-wide-on” - has been selected by Ann Shenton (she of Large Number, formerly of Add N to (X), and namesake of Sarah’s pet rat!) to be released on ‘The Electronic Bible chapter 2’. The compilation is set for release towards the end of February by White Label Music, and we Pains are incredibly excited by this prospect, not least because...

We have been asked to play at two of the Electronic Bible launch parties, Yeah!:
FRI 24 FEB: Windsor (with Large Number, X-Wife, and Hiem)
SUN 26 FEB: London (with Large Number, X-Wife, and Zil)

And all you Brighton Pain-fans will have to wait a little longer to catch some live Pain action:
FRI 10 MAR: at Polar Central with Motormark;
or catch some DJ action from all 3 Pains:
SAT 18 FEB: L’Amour Electronique at The Penthouse.

So there you have it: plenty of things to scrawl in yr diaries.

Stay warm, and don’t break yr new year resolutions.
Love
The Miss Pain three

And so, Miss Pain crept quietly into 2006....

Dear Pain-fans,
It’s a new year, and you may be forgiven for thinking us Pains have been resting on our laurels, debauching ourselves through the festive season, and generally getting out of shape.

You’d be wrong, of course, for we are in whippet-thin condition, with healthy, glossy coats and an interminable hunger to get back out there and cause a disturbance...

...Just as soon as we get a few chores finished.

As I type, Sarah Pain is in a plane, somewhere between Japan and Brighton. Be sure to wave as she flies by.

Meanwhile, things are afoot in Miss Pain HQ, Dom Pain is locked away in a damp, far-flung corner, correcting his Hypertext Markup Language and creating a ravishing new website. And Verity Pain has been deep in correspondence regarding our inclusion on Ann Shenton’s Electronic Bible chapter 2. You’ll also notice we have a few gigs coming up (look to the right...).

Conclusion: This is the calm before the storm - so hold on tight kids.
