The time is almost December and these are the items on our agenda:
- SAVE THE FREEBUTT (we mean it this time)
- MISS PAIN LIVE ACTION – SUN 10 DEC
- SARAH & DOM GO ART-CORE
- L’AMOUR ELECTRONIQUE – SAT 16 DEC
1. SAVE THE FREEBUTT
The Freebutt is still closed. Essential sound-proofing (£4,000) has not been done, and looks unlikely to happen. The powers-that-be won’t even stump-up £200 to repair a fire-exit, so that the venue can re-open for acoustic gigs. Meanwhile, across town, their swish new venue The H*pe is conveniently plugging the gap.
We’ve heard The Freebutt is on the market for something ridiculous like £40,000, but they won’t sell it to anyone who plans to re-open as a live music venue – Say NO to competition, and a big YES to the Z*l monopoly. So, how long before some unscrupulous property developer knocks it down to build luxury flats? Just what Brighton needs.
If you don’t want to see yet another Brighton venue shut down, it’s time to do your bit. Write to Brighton and Hove City Council by filling out the form here.
Though they may be too busy ploughing money into refurbishing the Mecca Bingo hall for their plush 300-capacity, touring-band friendly, council-funded venue to worry about the local music scene having nowhere to develop. You could ask them to comment on that too!
Above all, go to The Penthouse more often, they’re open every night of the week, and they need your custom to keep the doors open. You could even donate a bit of loose-change towards the fund to fix that fire-exit.
2. SUNDAY10 DECEMBER
Miss Pain presents Stitched-up Tight
Live music from LUXEMBOURG + MISS PAIN
The Hope, Queen’s Road, Brighton
Doors: 8pm – 11pm
Entry: £5/£4 mit flyer
(sorry we had no choice about the venue, we’d originally booked it at The Freebutt, but were forced to re-locate or cancel.)
This is our first DIY live-art-performance spectacle since March, and we’ll be pulling out all the stops, dressing up the venue with an avalanche of lo-fi décor and visual stimuli. It’s also our last show of the year, so come and celebrate with us, we won’t disappoint. We never disappoint.
LUXEMBOURG perform apocalyptically good pop to a crowd of devotees, for whom everything else is just foreplay. Welcome to your new favourite band - if you relax, it will be painless.
Luxembourg have just released their debut album FRONT (released 23.10.06 on Dogbox Records)

MISS PAIN recently headlined a full-to-bursting Brighton Live show, and have just picked up an NME RADAR feature (they said something about “Lambrini” “perverted uncles” and “caravans”!). They’ll be unleashing their wall of sound garage/electro-pop, pulling shapes, and generally causing a scene for loyal fans, curious first-timers, and the recently converted.
