NEWS FLASH!!!!!!

Miss Pain have finally completed recording of the final tracks for their next record. The master tapes have been dispatched to our producer, Mr Woodie Taylor, who has duly flung them into his space-echo chamber at Milou Studios.

They will be pinging around in there for some time until they have been dusted with a breath-taking amount of reverb and some gritty vitality.

Things we did last year: TWEE and SNAPS compilations

In 2009 we had a year off for various "life pursuits"...

And yet we still managed to release songs on a couple of compilations:

SNAPS vol 2 - The Primitive Compilation was released in November 2009 by Snaps Music Italy.

Miss Pain's 'Kiss Cuddle Torture' opens proceedings and there are 14 more nuggets of filthy-dirty NOW! garage from all over the place.

You can preview the whole album on myspace, and you can buy it from most online music download stores including emusic, itunes, amazon, etc.

Twee By The Sea vol. 2 was released in December 2009 by Jimmy from The Bobby McGees in association with Twee As Fuck

It features 8 Brighton bands: each one recorded live, round one mic, doing accoustic versions of their lovely songs. Miss Pain recorded a battery-powered version of 'Shelf-Location ROM' on giant Stylophone 350s, battery-amped guitar, casio VL-TONE beats and noise box.

It was available FREE from Twee As Fuck... and also from Brighton Record shops and in Limited Numbers in ROUGH TRADE & PURE GROOVE in London. It is probably sold out, but maybe if you ask Jimmy he will have a copy for you to buy.

We had a strange taxi ride on the way to L'Amour Electronique last month.

Our driver picked us up and was very excited to see we had proper vinyl records. He told us all about his Dansette and how he gets out his old gramaphone to play Bing Crosby every Christmas.

Somewhere near Seven Dials he asked if we would be doing any singing tonight. The conversation followed something like this:
Us: "No, but we do sing."
Taxi driver: "Are you in a band then?"
Us: "Yes, we're all in a band together"
Taxi driver: "You're not in the Miss Pain band, are you?"
Us: "Er, yes... we are."
Taxi driver: "I thought I recognised you. I gave you a lift once, you gave me one of your demonstration discs."
Us: "Blimey, you've got a good memory. Have you still got the record?"
Taxi driver: "Yes I have. Very pleasant it was too."
Us: "We're not sure if we've ever been described as pleasant before, but glad you liked it."

Maybe we'll be the subject of one of those "I had that Miss Pain in my taxi once, you know" stories.

Those naughty types at Hand Shandy zine have given us some rabid and unwholesome praise in the Spring issue of their dirty little pamphlet. Here's what they said about that single what we released last year...

Also, we're pleased to announce an end to the Miss Pain airwave drought*: Kiss Cuddle Torture was played on the Organ show on Resonance 104.4FM back in May. Looking at the playlist we were in the illustrious company of Genesis and Todd Rundgren, as well as The Low Anthem, and the endearingly named Gay Beast.

Blimey, looks like The Source finally found the single we sent them for review (released November 2008). They say nice things too!

SINGLE: MISS PAIN Shelf-Location ROM
We always knew that Miss Pain had it in them but Shelf-Location ROM’s pop is more polished than the band’s past. The arch-cleverness has taken a backseat to great melodies, a sing along chorus and tight riffing. Anyone looking for electronic craziness are well served by the 8-bit computer style bleepery of MC Fashion’s Kiss Cuddle Torture, the original of which is also chaotic fun. (JK)

Trommelmann: The Resurrection

Back in the "early days" we took perverse pleasure in opening our sets with what, in hindsight, could only be regarded as an obtuse, bloody-minded, but totally artistic statement of intent. It went by the name of Trommelmann. It was 4 minutes 36 seconds of martial drums and Psycho strings, with a flash-gun popping in the audience's eyes, all underpinned by the dog-bothering whine of a detuned radio.

At least that's what the audience heard.

There was a foreboding deep-bass melody picked out by Sarah on the Jen SX1000, but unfortunately every sound engineer who ever had the (mis)fortune to encounter Herr Trommelmann failed to bring this vital melody to the forefront. The result: the unsuspecting punters had their ears bashed by a relentless 4 and a half-minutes of belligerent clattering drums and not much else. There would be a smattering of polite applause at the end, and a thinned-out crowd as the dry ice lifted.

It took us quite some time to realise that this wasn't the best way to win a crowd - we heroically debuted it at our second gig at the Lounge Bar, Worthing on 03 May 2002, and its last recorded airing was at The Freebutt, Brighton on 23 October 2003. And the Trommelmann only lived on when we took to naming our rhythm section, of drums&bass in a metal box, after it.

Until now... There has been talk of late in the Miss Pain camp of resurrecting Trommelmann and knocking it into shape. So I powered up the old 8-track and took Herr Trommelmann to task. It emerged re-arranged, still brutal, and a little rough around the edges.

We will hopefully be putting Trommelmann on tape in our next recording sessions, but for now, here's a relic from those "early days":

Rubbish news today.

The White Noise Electronic Music Festival has had to be cancelled :(

here's the official line:
"Unfortunately due to the present economic climate, poor pre-sales and an inability to reach a break-even figure calculated by Hendra Holiday Park and due for payment tomorrow October 1st, we have had to take the regrettable decision to cancel the WNF Festival for this year.

Please believe us when I say that both parties (WLM) and PH promotions have worked very hard to make this event happen and although we had the monies in place to stage the show itself we did not have the resources available to underwrite the monies required by Hendra by the October 1st deadline.

We are in short, very upset, very tired and also I think safe to say very angry that we have not been able to secure the show this year.

All monies paid by ticket holders will be returned to them in full.

Again, we are very sorry for this cancellation and many thanks for your continued support of the label."

We have just spent 13 hours shut in a rehearsal room/cupboard honing the sound of Pain and making our fingers and ears bleed. Every now and then when the oxygen ran out, we would open the door and gulp down a few precious breaths of fresh air. But for the most part, we saw no daylight. We emerged tired and sore, but ready to head for Germany…

PANIC PANIC PANIC. We are unpacked, unprepared and Coco the Cat knows something is not right. We haven’t been able to play with her all morning. Sarah and David arrive in the van, it seems for once we have rented something better than the standard rust-bucket…

Listening to John Foxx, I set the tone for the tour, sounds like he’s singing “Touching Cloth”. Hit traffic on the M23, Verity is sewing feathers on my stage outfit.

The stage is tiny – about the size of a small double bed. We jam ourselves into place, pink feathers and all. I get a telling off for my bum-notes in Campari & Sex – I swear one of them wasn’t me. We get a tenner for our efforts and conclude that London promoters are generally useless fuckwits. Later, at Laura’s house, Sarah earns the title 'Electro-Womble' as she stops to pick up a piece of metal off the road.

>>DAY TWO – 31 MAY – MARGATE, UK
Laura feeds us a hearty breakfast and we are on our way. In Margate we are sent on a hunt to find a key for the only public toilet. You’d think that such a prized facility would at least be kept clean, but no… We visit the Shell Grotto. David is highly sceptical and believes it was built in the 20’s. The Pain’s favourite design is the Cocktail glass. Check out the lido and then walk down to the beach, Sarah slips on some green slime and slides down on her arse for 2 metres. We collect shells to make David his own personal shell grotto.

During soundcheck, a microphone falls and cracks me on the head - a cold, hard pain rushes through me, feeling sick and dizzy, with a pack of ice on the bump. The place is full of 18-year-old girls and boys, they are mighty confused by two girls and synthesizers. Buy they jump up and down like maniacs, and add whooping and hollering backing vocals, and clapping, wherever they can. As soon as they pick up the words they shout along in the choruses. The boys try to put Verity and Sarah off by making obscene gestures [we weren’t scared of some 18-year-old boys though! – Sarah & Verity]. The lighting is terrible; we can’t see a thing we’re playing. WE R PUNK ROCK.

>>DAY THREE – 01 JUNE – MÜLHEIM AN DER RUHR, DE
Wake at 5am to get the ferry URRGHHH. They don’t seem phased by the amount of shit we have in the van. Maybe they just want an easy life. We are separated from the truckers and people are confused as Sarah tries to sleep under the table – “Is it a child? What’s it doing?” She looks like the child/thing from Don’t Look Now in her red cardigan and knee socks…

Drive across Belgium and the Netherlands. Approx 16h15 we cross the border into Germany. Verity points out a town called Wankum. This amuses our addled brains.

AZ-Mülheim is a huge communal squat building. We are welcomed like old friends, they feed us heaps of vegan food and free drinks, give us beds and a hot shower. We are overwhelmed by their generosity. Sarah wanders into gender make-over corner, a guy puts strong glue on her upper lip and starts giving her a ‘tache – “It’s a bit wonky… later I will introduce you to the person whose hair it is”. We play to a warehouse full of Gender Terrorists. We love it. And they love it. We come dressed in white and gold with flying feathers. Sarah takes out a Gender Terrorist’s eye with her theremin during the encore. Someone tells us we should enter for Eurovision next year, he will vote for us. We have been awake for 24 hours now. We are drunk, tired, and happy. Miss Pain hearts Mülheim. Einfach Klasse! Wir Sind Der Hammer !!!!

What we learned today:
Einfach Klasse!! – First class!! (in a kinda 80's way).
Du bist der hammer – You are the hammer (in a kinda rock way we think).

>>DAY FOUR – 02 JUNE – KARLSRUHE, DE
We are fed a huge vegan breakfast, the sun is shining, do we really have to leave?

Fun fun fun on the Autobahn… We seem to have lost track of the days. It is Saturday, I think. Still feels like we are on holiday. Sarah’s moustache vanished in her sleep, mine is still here.

Karlsruhe: We are taken to a restaurant and fed good food and more drinks. Then we play in a vast derelict car show-room that has been converted to a temporary venue/gallery space. It will be destroyed in 2 weeks. We don black with yellow arrows and give them a good dose of the Pain, and they still want more. The Police arrive and close the impromptu disco in the office. Our new friends try and drag us on to a club in a slaughterhouse, but it is 4am and we convince Sarah that we must sleep. Back to our Art Nouveau hotel, super-size beds and chandeliers in our rooms.

E.B.F.H. (Live at Autohaus Zschernitz, Karlsruhe. 02.06.07)

What we learned today:
Super geil... Alter – Roughly translated as super sexy and then some (best said in rather deep voice).
Lüster klemme – Electric fuck or old fashioned electricians' term (we are not totally sure which)...
Will you be my luster klemme? (needs to be said with a 'Doctor Face').
Danke schön - Thank you. But you must say schön with a a long 'ooooo' sound, not an 'er' sound (as we were told all English people do). We were told we would look much cooler if we said it properly. Though in Berlin, they told us they just say Danke (no schön)!

>>DAY FIVE – 03 JUNE – DAY OFF/DRIVE TO BERLIN
5 hours later, I awake to the sound of church bells. We can’t resist a photo opportunity outside the bathroom…

Our host, Oliver has been up all night, but meets us for breakfast, and we eat like kings and queens. They ask us to sign the illustrious hotel guest book, we check out the other entries from Angie Reed, Bobby Conn, and Quintron & Miss Pussycat. Oliver then takes us to see his studio where he crafts incredible gold jewellery, he shows us a unicorn pendant he has carved from mammoth ivory, standing atop a tiny blue-enamelled gold strawberry (a gift for Bobby Conn’s wife). Beautiful.

We say our goodbyes and set off on the 7+ hour drive to Berlin. We fill up the van just before we hit empty, and discover the wonders of the UriMat - you piss on it and Albert Einstein lights up PING! Later, in the absence of hot water, Sarah tries tea made with sparkling water. The grimace each time she drinks suggests she may not try it again. We drive and drive, passing beautiful settlements and toy towns, mile after mile of forest and vast open farmland. We are wowed by soaring buzzards, and hovering kites, and majestic wind-farms, and every Autobahn mile is fast and smooth. Stopping for coffee and sandwiches: among other things the vending machine in the toilets dispenses something called the ‘Travel Pussy’ – presumably to keep the lonely truckers satisfied on those long lonely journeys.

20h10: The exhaust has reached the volume of a V8 engine, and the floor beneath my feet is getting toasty. Could this be the end of the Pain van? The exhaust has sheered off under the drivers seat and has been dragging along the tarmac. Luckily, like good Pains we have breakdown cover, we phone for assistance and wait. Verity films the dusk and the lights on a nearby wind-farm.

Sarah and David pass their ‘car breakdown in German’ module. The van ist nicht tot. We are back on the road.

23h30: Arrive in Berlin, we phone Brezel, and he drives out to find us, we follow so we can drop the Miss Pain arsenal off chez Stereo Total. They take us for falafel and a beer, then back to sleep in their amazing flat.

What we learned today:

>>DAY SIX – 04 JUNE – BERLIN, DE
They tell us they have no beans for breakfast, and are amused that we drink Earl Grey (“I thought it was an English stereotype”). Brezel is appalled at how long Sarah brews the tea for. Before we woke, he phoned a mechanic and arranged to drop the van off.

The mechanic tells Brezel the van is a heap of shit!! We are dropped at Alexanderplatz and go up the Fernsehturm, to get a glimpse of the city. Next we wander over to find the venue and visit some remaining sections of the wall.

When we return to collect the van, the guy tells us the exhaust is mostly rust and is like a sieve. As we wait for an invoice, Brezel tells us about the dream he had that morning. He dreamt about our performance – Sarah was dressed as a bourgeois lady in her boudoir. She was trying to catch Verity, who was dressed as a spider on the ceiling…

Later we play at a Cowboy Club. Verity smashes a bottle of glitter in her bag, so we all cover ourselves in it. In Berlin, we are told, Monday is like Sunday. Our audience is a small crowd of Berlin faces (Stereo Total, Mignon, Cabine, Miss Le Bomb, Noisy Pig, EchoKrank, Lady Gaby, and a handful of scenesters). Feels like an audition, hard to gauge a reaction, but we play our little socks off anyway. Verity uses Brezel’s leopard-print brothel creepers as a barometer of success – she says they tapped and danced all the way through. At the end we all lay on the stage, as we pack away our equipment, everyone comes and tells us how amazing the show was, and apologizes for the small crowd. A girl tells me she likes my ‘tache: “It is very Freddie”. I make a mental note to trim it to be more Sparks before the next show.

>>DAY SEVEN -- 05 JUNE – FRANKFURT AM MAIN, DE
Everyone into the van. Hit the Autobahn, and David requests his Yes double live album. We pretend we can’t find it for a while, but relent as he is driving. We spend about 4 hours spotting our pretend favourite bits. Nobody enjoys the drum solo. We offer to find David some feathers to wear so he can feel more Prog in the driving seat. We ponder what Miss Pain would be like on Yes’s budget. It frightens us. Even scarier – by the last song we’re actually enjoying Yes. We realise that David has just been nurturing the seed that was planted at the end of Endoscopy Blues.

At the service station they pipe Sting into the toilets – for a more tantric experience. And you can buy an ice-cream called ‘Bum Bum’. Back in the van, we race towards Frankfurt, and make it just in time for a speedy interview on RadioX, then on to the venue. There is a busted piano in the backroom. David scares us with renditions of Pain and Queen songs – like a demonic Les Dawson, with a maniacal grin. The turnout is small – there is a biiiiig show across town. But we play our best-est, and we pass the audition. By the last song we have a big enough crowd to make noise for an encore. We dedicate Buslanecrash to David. As we hit the first chorus it occurs to me that this may be a slightly ill-conceived portent for our journey home…

Day Seven - Sarah's lost it / David's had enough

We meet Frankfurt’s resident electro aficionado, he has seen 3 bands tonight – Coco Rosie, Miss Pain, and another. He says we beat the other 2 hands down. Another small victory for the Pains. We load the van, and drive to a small town outside the city. We cram ourselves into a tiny room with 2 of the biggest cats we have ever seen.

What we learned today:

>>DAY EIGHT -- 06 JUNE – HOMEWARD BOUND
Again, we have only had about 4 hours sleep. Our voices have all dropped about an octave – David is hitting Barry White low notes, Sarah is sounding more like Nico, and I have hit a pleasing Lee Hazlewood register. Verity is mysteriously unaffected. Hit the road, another gloriously sunny day. We have 7 hours to make Ostende. I finally get to listen to Love Is All. I am tired and happy.

13h40: We leave Germany. We vow to return as soon as we can. We have a near death experience trying to get onto the Brussels ring road. By some chilling coincidence Suicide’s ‘Ghost Rider’ comes on as we sit in traffic, trying to calm our shot nerves. Nobody mentions Buslanecrash.

Sitting in the ferry lounge, loading up on nasty cheap coffee, we hear something even more alarming – a car-crash record mixing up Sting and Snow Patrol – we hope we never have to hear it again. First on the ferry, so we commandeer the TV and watch ‘Walk The Line’ and ‘Amadeus’ (David hopes it'll have Falco's 'Rock Me Amadeus' in it - it doesn't. Furthermore, it is shit!), drink more coffee, and try to stay awake.

At passport control, as they check the contents of the van, we try to explain what kind of band we are. They seem convinced and let us back in. The roundabouts are a minor challenge, so we decide to stop for food and have to spend £10 on 2 sandwiches and 2 cups of tea. David puts on the Bonzo’s to keep him awake – “Look out there’s a monster coming…” We arrive back at Miss Pain HQ around 1am and unload. Coco the cat is waiting for us, and makes us play with her for 2 hours before we can empty our heads to sleep. Tomorrow we return to normality.

wow! i had such a fun bank holiday weekend! yeah! it went as follows: friday=blue ice cream (kidz were in awe!!!!)/paddling/drinking wine with my sis 'n' mate in the garden/dancing down the girl-power-sexist-disko....saturday=i went to see BIS!!!! i haven't had that much fun at a gig for years....BIS!!!!YEAH!!!....sunday=sunday lunch/drinking rather nice cidre on the beach with my friends/more ice cream (green and pink)/kareoke (i sang 'pop musik' by m...it was a HIT!... i think ;-)/party time!....monday=6 hour country walk with david (the miss pain sound engineer) around the south downs (devils dyke to ditchling beacon to stanmer park)/wild flowers/frollicking deer/baby rabbits/ginger beer/getting mildly electrocuted by touching an electric fence 'to see if it was on' (well done sarah!!)/it getting dark before we were anywhere near home/cup of earl grey on arrival back in brighton....and that was my super-rock-'n'-roll-nature-walk-bank-holiday-bender.... hope you had a fun time too....love sarah xxx

“Nick Cave might have the ‘No Pussy Blues’ on the Grinderman album but you know that a metal probe up his insides would soon stop his moaning. What a pain in the arse! Less synthy than you might be expecting, on ‘Endoscopy Blues’ Dom manages to make the whole metaphor work with menace, while Sarah actually makes the process sound sexy. The lo-fi Shangri-Las meets The Cramps at The Rum Runner backing should find plenty of fans now The Gossip are top ten stars”

1. SAVE THE FREEBUTT
The Freebutt is still closed. Essential sound-proofing (£4,000) has not been done, and looks unlikely to happen. The powers-that-be won’t even stump-up £200 to repair a fire-exit, so that the venue can re-open for acoustic gigs. Meanwhile, across town, their swish new venue The H*pe is conveniently plugging the gap.

We’ve heard The Freebutt is on the market for something ridiculous like £40,000, but they won’t sell it to anyone who plans to re-open as a live music venue – Say NO to competition, and a big YES to the Z*l monopoly. So, how long before some unscrupulous property developer knocks it down to build luxury flats? Just what Brighton needs.

If you don’t want to see yet another Brighton venue shut down, it’s time to do your bit. Write to Brighton and Hove City Council by filling out the form here.
Though they may be too busy ploughing money into refurbishing the Mecca Bingo hall for their plush 300-capacity, touring-band friendly, council-funded venue to worry about the local music scene having nowhere to develop. You could ask them to comment on that too!

Above all, go to The Penthouse more often, they’re open every night of the week, and they need your custom to keep the doors open. You could even donate a bit of loose-change towards the fund to fix that fire-exit.

What we did last week...

Dear Pain-fans,
On bank-holiday Monday we three Pains took a little trip to the seaside (it was a different seaside called Littlehampton)...

First we went to "Fun Land", where Leonardo Da Vinci drew this picture of us.

We tried to point out to him that Sarah doesn't actually have a beard of iron-filings, but he took our £3 and scarpered. Now where's the fun in that?

Next we went on the "amazing boat-train". Which wasn't very amazing but the 'locomotive' was shaped a bit like a boat. Here we are being amazed (note: Dom's incognito look)

We got off the train at an "adventure golf course", and we were ready for some adventure, so...

Sarah adopts her professional golfer stance.

On Wednesday, we returned to The Red Room to mix three new recordings, which will be on MySpace very soon.

Dom returns from another vocal-take with his drink of choice - hot honey and lemon with a shot of brandy.

Meanwhile Verity and Sarah busy themselves with work of greater importance...

Later that week, Sarah shamelessly dropped 'Endoscopy Blues' whilst DJ'ing at an indie club. And the kids? They shook their skinny little asses.

The word on the street is that The Freebutt has been closed due to noise complaints from local residents. This is bad bad news for live music in Brighton, especially as people are being rather cagey about when it will re-open.

Do your bit:

Write to the Council and tell them they should be investing in grass-roots culture, not trying to stop it (quote them: “Brighton & Hove is a vibrant, multicultural city which offers a wide range of leisure pursuits for everyone to enjoy.”),
Fill out a Council complaints form
Tell the good people at The Freebutt you miss the gigs and that they should fix it up pronto.

But let’s not let them piss on our parade, keep coming to The Penthouse, and help keep the place ticking over. Here’s a good reason:

The mighty Les Georges Leningrad almost disappointed us and a horde of Brighton-types last Saturday. But they turned up in the nick of time, and blew a hole in our heads with their awesome no-wave-disco-screams-and-perversions. Merci Poney, Mingo et Bobo.

Afterwards they had nowhere to stay, so Sarah offered them her floor, and we took them under Miss Pain's wing. And what did we do with them? Took them to a kebab shop, fed them cheap cider, talked French Pop and stage decor, and taught them puerile swears like 'Wanker'. Aren't we good little Pains?

Self-styled “1st lady of the ghetto” Dear Britch hosts an evening of Britch-i-ness and faded glamour (like you used to get down the end of the pier). Dear Britch may well be the Quentin Crisp / Marjorie Proops of the electro world.

Miss Pain will be headlining this seedy cabaret in their usual inimitable way. They promise cheap thrills and spills, screaming, preening, posing and falling, plus a brand new song about microscopic cameras.
Miss Pain will be onstage at about 11.30pm

The Don Bradmans will also play. (For those of you who know Dom Pain’s civilian name, this may be confusing.) The Don Bradmans regard themselves as “the undisputed champions of chap rock”. There are many of them, and they all go by the name Don Bradman, whilst sporting head-to-toe tweed and well groomed facial whiskers.

Moving pictures will be provided by Mister Rupert Noble, who has been responsible for creating striking pop videos for the likes of The Long Blondes, This Et Al, The Dirty Three. Rupert also made Miss Pain’s dashing ‘Caught My Eye’ video, which will be screened during the evening.

This weekend sees us Pain’s on the airwaves. Totally Wired presenters, Marcus and Anna, have invited us in to talk about the Electronic Bible 2 compilation, and to play some of our fave tracks off it. We’ll be broadcast across Brighton and all over the WorldWideWeb. And it’ll be LIVE. gulp!

Long-serving live favourite ‘F* Machines’ - described by Plan B as “a searing Ballardian synthscape...like The Normal-with-a-wide-on” - has been selected by Ann Shenton (she of Large Number, formerly of Add N to (X), and namesake of Sarah’s pet rat!) to be released on ‘The Electronic Bible chapter 2’. The compilation is set for release towards the end of February by White Label Music, and we Pains are incredibly excited by this prospect, not least because...

Dear Pain-fans,
It’s a new year, and you may be forgiven for thinking us Pains have been resting on our laurels, debauching ourselves through the festive season, and generally getting out of shape.

You’d be wrong, of course, for we are in whippet-thin condition, with healthy, glossy coats and an interminable hunger to get back out there and cause a disturbance...

...Just as soon as we get a few chores finished.

As I type, Sarah Pain is in a plane, somewhere between Japan and Brighton. Be sure to wave as she flies by.

Meanwhile, things are afoot in Miss Pain HQ, Dom Pain is locked away in a damp, far-flung corner, correcting his Hypertext Markup Language and creating a ravishing new website. And Verity Pain has been deep in correspondence regarding our inclusion on Ann Shenton’s Electronic Bible chapter 2. You’ll also notice we have a few gigs coming up (look to the right...).

Conclusion: This is the calm before the storm - so hold on tight kids.

That Nightmare before Christmas

So thank you all those dear dear people who came to Tinseltown on Friday nite and shook their complimentary sleigh-bells. Thank you to The Schla La Las for glamour beyond the call of duty with their Marilyn dresses, and especially for “I’m going back to Germany to stuff my face”. Thank you Feline1 for sound-tracking the evening with a sprinkling of audio delights and curiosities (for full setlist see comments to previous post). Thank you to the glamorous Miss Sell on projections and driving duties. Thank you Mister Bobby Laws for lending us yr drum-kit, which took us about an hour to dismantle (in our world, all drum-kits come in little boxes, with LED lights!). Thank you Miss Christina for welcoming our guests, and taking their hard-earned spends in exchange for entertainment and merchandise. Thank you the Freebutt staff for not locking us in as we tried desperately to dismantle that drum-kit. Thank you anyone who helped tidy up by taking home a piece of the over-the-top lo-fi decor we plastered across every surface of the venue. And finally, thank you everyone for bearing with us through the, er, technical difficulties. We’d like to think you now know a little too much about Sarah Pain than you ought to, following her stream of consciousness/ad-libing, during those painful moments that had Dom Pain desperately scrabbling around un-plugging and plugging in to get things working again.

We made it through in the end, and came out with sleigh-bells ringing in our ears and an abiding memory from every time we looked up and were met with a sea of gob-smacked faces. It looked a little like this:

Apologies to all who turned up to see some Pain action in Leeds – owing to matters completely out of our control, and some exceptionally useless/unhelpful persons, the gig didn’t go ahead. This was despite us having driven 250 miles, having all the equipment we needed, and having a professional sound-engineer on-hand. Bunch of C***S, pretty much sums that one up. And we don’t use the C word lightly!!

We’ll no doubt post the full story on this here Blog when we have the time.

from naughty Serge to Soft Cell, via Stereo Total and Cobra Killer. Neil Tennant-PetShopBoy turned up last time to find us rolling drunk, and he apparently approved of what he saw and heard...

Other exciting news:
1. It seems we neglected to arrange a fanfare to let you all know about the dashing video for ‘Caught My Eye’, directed by the terribly talented Rupert Noble. You can watch it at his site [also available at VidZone, between Mis-Teeq and Missy Elliott].

2. Miss Pain have been busy working behind the scenes at Miss Pain HQ, where they have just recorded their kick-ass brand new song ‘Sell it 2 the Kids’. This was immediately sent by carriage pigeon to a member of Chicks on Speed in Barcelona, and will hopefully be the Pains’ contribution to the forthcoming CoS compilation ‘Girl-Monster’. The pigeon has not yet returned.

3. Dom Pain has begun the arduous task of overhauling the Miss Pain website, so it will look ravishing, sparkly and new. It is planned to feature a whole avalanche of hitherto untapped material from the Miss Pain archive. Prepare to be astounded.

4. Sarah Pain recently took her pet rat to the vets to get her fixed. Sarah’s rat is called Ann, and is named after she of Add N to (X) who has chosen F*Machines to appear on her new compilation ‘The Electronic Bible 2’ (to be released shortly). Sarah has another rat called Ivy (as in Poison Ivy). Ivy has red eyes, but is not sickly and shaved like poor Ann.

5. Verity Pain has given up full-time employment to study Cold War design in order to become Dr Pain. She will be hanging out at the V&A museum in London talking about Sputniks and Eastern bloc chic.

6. Dom Pain is still reluctantly in almost-full-time employment. The struggle continues to free the Miss Pain one.

7. Sarah Pain continues to DJ across Brighton, rumour is she has been cloned in order to appear in more than one place at once. Unfortunately this has lead to her spending all the money she earns on duplicating her record collection.

8. The original Sarah Pain will appear at the Sidewinder pub, Upper St. James Street, Kemptown tonite (30.09.05), and will be playing her ALL-TIME TOP 100 records. Come and watch her get misty-eyed over David Byrne and Bryan Ferry, and prepare to be shocked.

My little ratty Ann is in hospital today. I named her after Ann Shenton from add n to (x). She's gotta have an operation, but i think she is going to be ok. When i walked home from the vets i saw millions of tiny baby snails and that cheered me up.

Neil Tennant turned up at the last one, and we were all so drunk we don’t remember packing up. So it must have been good.

Come see us causing tremors in the ballroom with our girl/boy electro-shock art-core pop! The set will include old ones about flammable nightwear and tampering with telephones, plus 2 hot new ones, to make you sweat and shake and stamp yr feet.

Headliners will be Brighton’s sassiest heirs to the Girl-group throne - The Pipettes. They dress in polka-dot and like boys and girls in uniform. So make the effort!

More-than-able support comes from The Poppycocks and Britch, plus, there’ll be dancing and shaking ‘til 2am with DJs Monster Bobby and Alex-Electric-Soft-Parade.
